NGORONGORO
CONSERVATION AREA (NCA)
The area covers some 8300 sq. kms and is located 156 kms
west of Arusha. As well as the unique Ngorongoro crater,
it boasts the finest blend mountain landscapes, shaped
by rifts and volcanoes, wildlife and archeological sites
in Africa. It is also a pioneering experiment in multiple
land use for the benefits of both Maasai people and wildlife
and cultural value, Ngorongoro has been declared an International
Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK
Located only 45 kms from Arusha, this relatively small
park (137 sq kms) includes a wide range of habitats ,
from alkaline crater lakes and swamps to the highlands
mountian forests and the summit of Mt. Meru, the fourth
highest mountain of Africa. Mammals include buffalo, elephants,
giraffe, hippopotamus, zebra, leopard, watebuck, redbuck
and almost 4000 species of birds. It is famous for the
beautiful black and white colobus monkey which springs
from branch to branch in the tall rain forest trees and
the shy duiker which skulks below. The park is ideal for
a day game drive or pleasant few hours walk. Those who
plan to tackle Mount Meru however, must consider three
full days.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Known as the park of elephants and baobabs, Tarangire
National Park is located only 114 kms of a good tarmac
road from ARusha. It is crossed by the Tarangire River,
that irresistibly lures the herd of plain migrants to
its permanent waters during the dry season. Between July
and November the park host heds of thousands of wildbeests
and zebra, coming from all over the Maasai steppe, and
from as far as the shores of Lake Natron. elephant, buffalo,
hartebeest, eland, lion, cheetah and many other species
live in the park throughout the year but are more numerous
during the dry season.
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Lying in a shallow depression at the base of the Rift
valley and backed by red and brown cliffs of the escarpment,
this serene park is dominated by the lake and beautifull
cool, lush and mature ground water forest, home to blue
and vervet monkeys, baboons, bushbuck and plenty of birdsand
butterflies. When the thick vegetation of the forest eventually
merges into flat-topped acacia woodland, elephant giraffe,
impala, buffalo and zebra can easily be spotted. Also
the lions can be seen, sometimes stretching out in the
branches of the acacia, a habit commonly seen in Manyara.
